One of my favourite excursions this summer, picking blueberries at Ngatea orchard this weekend. A well organised operation, the most juiciest, plumpest, sweetest blueberries I've ever tasted. About an hour and a half from central Auckland over the Bombay hills you'll find Blueberry Country, it's well sign posted once you get to Ngatea.
The only cost is for the blueberries, $11 a kilo. A bargain really, and you can eat as you go! I'm surprised I didn't leave looking like the character Violet from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory!
We enjoyed an afternoon picking the berries and sampling the quality food from the extensive menu in their cafe. I was quite excited whilst picking berries just thinking of the endless recipes I could try over the coming week, not to mention just pulling them from the freezer to soothe Mr 14 months when he's teething.
So far I've managed to make muffins!! Well, I had the best intentions!!!
I did learn a lesson though, make sure you and kids wear old clothes! You should also pack closed toe shoes, sun lotion, bottled water, wet wipes and sun hats.
They told me the blueberry season will finish at the end of February, so if you're stuck for something to do this weekend I would really recommend this.
